Pope Benedict XVI was born in 1927 Germany. As the Nazi regime was gaining power, he was forced to join the Hitler Youth after membership became mandatory in 1941. After the war, he turned to theological studies and became the pope of the Catholic Church in 2005. He served until 2013 and is best known for his rigid views on Catholicism and topics such as birth control and homosexuality.
