Background:
Pope John Paul II was born as Karol Wojtyla on 18 May 1920. Born in Poland, he was deeply affected by the torment that was World War II. He was ordained in 1946, and became the first non Italian-pope in over 400 years in 1978. In 2005, he died in Italy. Pope Francis canonized him a saint in 2014.
